Some of the world’s most famous royal families reside in India. With our ancient culture, exquisite arts, exquisite textiles, fine perfumes and proud heritage, India is renowned for its richness and prosperity. The achievements of our royal dynasties, the architectural marvels and luxuries they developed are still talked about all over the world.

After the central government abolished royal titles in 1971, the reigns of kings and royal families came to an end in India. But even today, some royal families are not only maintaining their heritage but also indulge in luxury.

Mewar Empire: The Mewar Empire belonged to the oldest ruling family in India. It was inherited by the Mewar emperors as descendants of King Maharana Pratap. Sriji Arvind Singh Mewar, the 76th heir, is now honoring this royal family legacy.

He is the Chairman of HRH Group of Hotels. Traditional palace hotels and resorts operate under this company.

Wodiyar Empire: The Wodiyar dynasty is the foremost among the richest royal families in India. In 2013, following the death of Srikanthadatta Wodiyar, Rajamata adopted Yaduveer Krishnadatta Samsaj Wodiyar as his son and had him baptized.

Yaduvir Krishnadatta’s stepfather was Srikanthadatta. His net worth is Rs.10,000 crore. Yaduveer and his family now live in the Mysore Palace. Yaduveer is also the owner of the world famous silk brand The Royal Silk of Mysore.

Nawab of Pattodi: The late Mansoor Ali Khan Pattodi, father of Bollywood star Saip Ali Khan, was the last king of the Pattodi Empire. Mansoor Ali Khan Pattodi married actress Sharmila Tagore. Saip Ali Khan now holds the title of Nawab of Patodi.

However, Saif Alikhan did not inherit the palace from his father like his ancestors. Instead he bought the palace from the Neemrana Group of Hotels. Saif Ali Khan’s father had leased the palace for 17 years.

Jaipur Royal Family: Maharaja Bhawani Singh was the last ruler of Jaipur. In the absence of a son, Maharaja Bhawani Singh adopted the son of his daughter Diya Kumari. In 2011, he formally conferred the title of Maharaja of Jaipur on adopted son Padmanab Singh.

Jodhpur Royal Family: Maharaja Gaj Singh and his family, the heirs of the Rathor family, the former rulers of Jodhpur, reside in Umaid Bhawan Palace. The palace boasts of being the largest private residence in the world. Tourists are allowed to visit a part of it.

The palace is managed by the Taj Group of Hotels. Also the Jodhpur royal family owns the famous Merangar Fort. Maharaja Gaj Singh, renowned for his charitable endowments, founded the famous Rajamata Krishna Kumari Girls’ Public School. It is one of the reputed educational institutions in India.

Gaikwad Dynasty: Samarjitsingh Rao Gaikwad and his family, descended from the Gaikwad dynasty of Baroda, reside in the Lakshmi Vilas Palace. Maharaja Samarjeet Singh is famous not only for his royal heritage but also for the game of cricket. Maharaja has played for his state in the Ranji Trophy. His property is worth more than Rs.20,000 crore.

Bikaner Royal Family: Maharaja Karni Singh, Princess Rajyasree Kumari, daughter of Maharani Sushila Kumari, owns the famous Lalkar Palace in Bikaner. Rajyasree has converted this palace into a heritage hotel keeping his hereditary right.
